Lakers Blanked by Syracuse in Game One

Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Women's Ice Hockey team came up short in a defensive battle, falling 1-0 to Syracuse in Game 1 of the AHA Semifinals on Friday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Despite outshooting the Orange 47-15, the Lakers were unable to solve Allie Kelley, who posted a shutout to give Syracuse the early series lead.

How It Happened:

The game's lone goal came at 11:34 of the first period, as Charli Kettyle found the back of the net for Syracuse off assists from Nea Tervonen and Stella Costabile. The goal proved to be the game-winner, as both teams played scoreless hockey the rest of the way.

Mercyhurst dominated possession throughout the contest, firing 47 shots on goal, but Syracuse's Allie Kelley turned away every attempt. The Lakers generated multiple high-quality chances, including three shots off the post in the second and third periods.

The Lakers had two power-play opportunities, including one in the third period, but failed to capitalize. Syracuse also had two power plays, but Mercyhurst's penalty kill held strong.

With time winding down in regulation, Mercyhurst pulled goaltender Jorden Mattison for an extra attacker, but the Orange defense stood tall to preserve the 1-0 win.

Notable Performances:

  • Thea Johansson led the Lakers with four shots on goal, including a near-miss off the post.

  • Allie Kelley (Syracuse) recorded 47 saves, earning the shutout victory.

Special Teams:

  • Mercyhurst: 0-for-2 on the power play

  • Syracuse: 0-for-2 on the power play

Up Next:

Mercyhurst (18-15-2) will look to even the series in Game 2 on Saturday at 2:00 PM at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. A win would force a decisive Game 3 on Sunday.
