Women’s Hockey Splits Series with Lindenwood

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's hockey team hosted Lindenwood for their final game of the calendar year. Yesterday, the Lakers completely dominated the Lions. They held them to just 17 shots while beating them 10-1. Today, Lindenwood flipped the script. The Lions scored early and continued to convert their chances throughout the game as they stunned the Lakers 5-2. 
 
The game began with Lindenwood (6-14-2, 4-7-1 AHA) taking an early lead just 18 seconds into the period. Mercyhurst (11-9-2, 7-4-1 AHA) responded within seconds as Payten Evans found the equalizer. This one was assisted by Julia Schalin and Sophie McKinley. Despite several offensive efforts from the Lakers, the Lion's regained their lead at 10:06 and added a third at 8:03. Mercyhurst pressed for a comeback, generating numerous scoring opportunities, but Lindenwood's defense held firm. The period concluded with Mercyhurst trailing 3-1.
 
Mercyhurst capitalized on a power-play opportunity early in the second frame, with Julia Perjus scoring at 15:33. This goal was assisted by Sofia Nuutinen and Evans. Despite continued offensive pressure and another power-play chance, the Lakers could not convert their further attempts into goals. The period concluded with Lindenwood holding onto a 3-2 lead.
 
Lindenwood extended their advantage early in the third period with a goal at the 17:55 mark, increasing the lead to four The Lakers responded by creating numerous scoring opportunities, including shots from Jade Maisonneuve and Avery Bryk, but were repeatedly denied by the Lion's netminder. Lakers had a chance to shift momentum with another power play following an interference penalty, but they were unable to capitalize. Despite a series of attempts from Maja Alenius and Nuutinen during another power play, the Lakers could not score. The period concluded with Lindenwood securing an empty-net goal, finalizing their 5-2 victory.
 
The Lakers next game will take place after the New Year at Lindenwood. Puck drop is set for Friday, Jan. 2 at 4 p.m.
