The Mercyhurst women's basketball team will meet Robert Morris for the second consecutive season Wednesday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. with over 300 Erie school children set to attend the game. The game will steam on NEC Front Row.
The Opponent
The Colonials are out to a 4-2 start to the season, collecting wins over Duquesne, UIC, Saint Francis, and Akron. RMU was picked to finish second in the Horizon League Preseason Poll, receiving one first place vote. Green Bay earned the top spot while YSU, Cleveland State, and Purdue Fort Wayne rounded out the top five.
The Colonials have three different players averaging 10 or more points per game with senior guard Aislin Malcolm leading the way with 13.7 per contest.
Last Time Out
Mercyhurst visited Canisius for the first time in program history Sunday. The Lakers got out to a hot start, taking a 14-point lead with 1:48 remaining in the first quarter. However, the Lakers were unable to hang on to their lead, allowing Canisius to take a 37-30 lead at the half. Despite scoring 28 points off turnover and 15 fast break points, the Lakers gave up 44 points in the paint to Canisius. The Golden Griffins scored their first win of the year over the Lakers, 75-67.
Heating Up Hernandez
Sophomore guard
Cici Hernandez had a career day at Canisius, scoring 20 points on five 3-point makes and going a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. Hernandez added three rounds and a steal in the loss.
Disruptive
Mercyhurst had its most steals of the season at Canisius with 15.
Gabby Sweeney had a career-high five steals in the game while the Lakers posted a season-low 11 turnovers. Over the last five games, the Lakers are averaging 8.2 steals per contest.
Familiar Face
Senior
Bailey Kuhns makes her return to the Mercyhurst Athletic Center Wednesday after transferring to Robert Morris following the 2024-25 season. Kuhns lead the Lakers in their first Division I season, averaging 19.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest, while shooting 49 percent from the floor. To start the 2025-26 season, Kuhns has averaged 10 points per game while adding 5.2 boards, shooting over 50 percent from the floor.
Scoring the ball
The Lakers scored 60 or more points in back-to-back games for the first time this season at Iowa State and Canisius. Mercyhurst is 27-13 in games in which they score more than 60 points over the last three seasons.
