SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Mercyhurst women's basketball team (0-11, 0-0 NEC) fell to Syracuse (11-1, 1-0 ACC), 106-40, at JMA Wireless Dome.
Erica Hall led the way for the Lakers with 14 points.
Syracuse took an early lead in the first quarter. The Lakers responded with a 3-pointer by
Erica Hall at 8:27, assisted by
Sofia Wilson, cutting the deficit. However, the Orange maintained pressure, extending their lead with a combination of fast breaks and points in the paint. Despite another 3-point shot from Hall at 5:59, the quarter concluded with Syracuse leading 32-12.
Mercyhurst began the second quarter with a layup by
Quinn Borroni at 9:22, who saw her first minutes of the season after returning from injury.
Cici Hernandez made a 3-pointer at 7:39, with an assist from Wilson, contributing to the team's efforts. Despite these attempts, the quarter was dominated by Syracuse, who extended their lead with steady scoring and defensive pressure, resulting in a 26–12 advantage in the quarter. The half concluded with Syracuse leading 58–24.
The Lakers began the third quarter with a steal by
Shannon Heine, leading to a successful 3-pointer by
Ella Cupka at 9:20, assisted by Hernandez. Despite this early momentum, Mercyhurst faced challenges as the Orange dominated inside the paint, scoring 16 points in the area. Wilson contributed one free throw, but the quarter concluded with the Green and Blue trailing. The quarter ended with the Orange leading Mercyhurst 85-32.
The Lakers struggled to shift the momentum in the final quarter, with Hernandez converting a layup at 7:04 and
Gabby Sweeney adding a 3-pointer at 4:34.
Emma Sollenne made her first career basket at the end of the fourth, but the Lakers fell 106-40.
Mercyhurst continues the season after the new year, hosting NEC foe FDU Jan. 2.
