ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team fell to RIT, 3–2, at the Gene Polisseni Center. The Lakers' effort included 35 shots on goal, but RIT secured the win with a third-period goal.
The game began with both teams vying for control, but it was the Tigers who struck first at 13:28. Despite this early setback, the Green and Blue quickly responded.
Tyler Nasca equalized just 26 seconds later at 13:03 with help from
Trent Sambrook, leveling the score at one apiece.
Mercyhurst maintained pressure with several shots on goal and effective faceoff wins, while
Charles-Edward Gravel made crucial saves to keep RIT at bay. The first period concluded with the score tied at 1-1, setting the stage for a competitive matchup.
Mercyhurst opened the second period with a determined start, winning the initial faceoff and immediately pressing RIT's defense, with
Connor Pelc frequently challenging the opposing goaltender. Despite sustained offensive pressure, Mercyhurst's numerous shot attempts were either saved or blocked, as the Tiger netminder stood firm in net for RIT.
Throughout the period, the Lakers consistently controlled play, showcasing resilience on faceoffs and generating multiple scoring opportunities. However, RIT's defense managed to hold the line, and a Tiger goal at 3:37 shifted momentum in RIT's favor, providing them a crucial lead.
As the period concluded, the Green and Blue continued to press but was unable to find the equalizer. The scoreboard reflected a 2-1 deficit for the Lakers heading into the third period.
The third period began with a quick goal by RIT at 19:40, extending their lead to 3-1. The Lakers responded with determination, maintaining offensive pressure throughout the period. Despite several shots on goal, RIT's goaltender made key saves to deny any immediate comeback.
Midway through the period, Mercyhurst found a breakthrough when
Barrett Brooks scored at 5:52, assisted by
Spencer Smith and Jacob Leblanc, reducing the deficit to 3-2. The Lakers fought hard for an equalizer, but RIT's defense held firm. The period closed with the score remaining 3-2 in favor of RIT.
Brooks scored one goal on five shots, contributing significantly to the team's offensive efforts.
Brendan Lamb excelled in faceoffs, winning 61 percent of his draws from the circle. Smith also stood out in faceoff performance, capturing 62 percent of his attempts and adding an assist. Nasca found the back of the net once and tallied an assist, making the most of his three shots on goal. LeBlanc also picked up his fourth assist of the season.
The Lakers will play again in two weeks as they travel to Canisius.
