Lakers Cruise Past Penn State New Kensington Behind Blunt’s Perfect Shooting

ERIE, Pa. — Mercyhurst University defeated Penn State New Kensington 93–43 on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The home team dominated from start to finish, never trailing in the game. The Lakers capitalized on 20 turnovers by Penn State New Kensington, converting them into 20 points. They showcased a strong presence in the paint, scoring 46 points inside. Mercyhurst's bench contributed significantly, adding 45 points to the total.

Mercyhurst opened the first half with a strong offensive performance, quickly establishing a lead with Jake Lemelman's three-pointer in the first minute. Mykolas Ivanauskas contributed significantly, scoring a jumper and converting two free throws, which helped extend their advantage.

Deshaun Jackson Jr. and Bernie Blunt III added to the momentum with successful layups, while the team capitalized on Penn State New Kensington's turnovers. Notably, Blunt's perfect shooting from the field and beyond the arc was a highlight of the game.

Mercyhurst's defense played a key role, forcing multiple turnovers and securing 17 defensive rebounds. The half ended with the Lakers leading 44–17, showcasing a commanding start to the game.

Christian Gamble initiated a strong second half for the Lakers with back-to-back three-pointers in the opening minute, pushing the lead to 50–17. Blunt further extended the advantage with another three-pointer around the second minute. The home team controlled the game through effective shooting in the paint, highlighted by Ivanauskas and Cameron Johnson's contributions, which helped them maintain a decisive lead.

The Lakers capitalized on Penn State New Kensington's turnovers, converting them into fast-break opportunities and maintaining a comfortable margin throughout the half. Mercyhurst's defense limited the visitors' scoring chances, resulting in a 49–26 second-half score. The game ended with the Lakers securing a commanding 93–43 victory.

Blunt scored 18 points on a perfect 7-for-7 shooting, including four three-pointers. Johnson recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Ivanauskas added 16 points and collected 10 rebounds, also picking up a double-double. Gamble contributed 11 points, converting all three of his 3-point attempts.
