BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Mercyhurst women's basketball team fell to Canisius, 75-67, on Sunday in Buffalo despite forcing 23 turnovers and scoring 28 points off those mistakes.
The Lakers (0-6) opened the game with assertive play, seizing control by capitalizing on turnovers and fast breaks to gain early momentum.
Lena Walz initiated the scoring with a layup and later drained a three-pointer along with knocking down free throws, contributing significantly to the team's offense.
Gabby Sweeney and
Cici Hernandez capitalized on defensive stops with key 3-pointers, pushing the Lakers ahead 15–9 midway through the quarter.
Jenna Van Schaik's accuracy from the line helped extend the lead, allowing the Green and Blue to maintain control and close the first quarter ahead 23–14 over Canisius.
The Lakers began the second quarter with a promising start as Hernandez connected on a three-pointer at 9:07, assisted by Walz. However, Canisius responded with a series of successful buckets, including a layup from Shariah Gailes at 6:06, narrowing the Lakers' lead and eventually overtaking them at 5:08. Despite a layup by
Erica Hall at 3:40, the Lakers struggled to sustain momentum, missing multiple attempts from beyond the arc. The quarter concluded with
Imani Frazier banking in a layup at the buzzer, but Canisius held the advantage, ending the half with a 37-30 lead.
Mercyhurst began the third quarter by slicing through the lane with a crucial sequence as Van Schaik's layup at 9:49 was followed by Sweeney's swipe, setting up a Walz 3-pointer at 8:53 to reduce the deficit to two points. The Green and Blue continued to press, with
Sofia Wilson assisting Van Schaik's layup to momentarily give Mercyhurst a 38–37 lead at 7:43. Despite a back-and-forth battle with Canisius regaining and extending their lead, Sweeney hit a critical layup at 3:56, and Hernandez connected on a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left, keeping the score close. The quarter concluded with the Lakers outscoring Canisius 18–15, narrowing the gap to a 52–48 Canisius lead.
The Lakers pushed to close the gap in the fourth quarter with a late run spearheaded by Hernandez, who sank back-to-back 3-pointers at 39 seconds and 25 seconds, reducing Canisius's lead. Despite their efforts, which included a forceful defensive play by Walz with a steal at 4:17, the Lakers could not overcome the deficit. The quarter ended with the Lakers scoring 19 points to Canisius's 23, leading to a final score of 75-67 in favor of Canisius.
Hernandez led the team with 20 points, converting all five of her free throws and making five 3-pointers. Walz contributed 15 points and recorded seven rebounds while adding two steals. Sweeney tallied nine points and excelled defensively with five steals. Van Schaik scored 11 points, also posting two steals and three assists.
