Men's Basketball Drops Season Opener to Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. — Mercyhurst opened their season against Northwestern falling 70-47 at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Despite the Lakers picking the Wildcats pockets, which included eight steals, they couldn't find their rhythm offensively, shooting 18-for-60 from the field. The Wildcats capitalized at the free-throw line, converting 27 of 38 attempts to widen the gap. Their bench contributed 23 points, aiding in their victory.

The first half began with Northwestern taking an early lead, but the Lakers steadily worked to keep the game competitive. Bernie Blunt III initiated the Lakers' scoring with a layup two and a half minutes into play, assisted by Christian Gamble. Despite the Wildcats' ability to maintain an edge, the Lakers responded effectively through free throws and a three-pointer by Cameron Johnson towards the end of the first, assisted by Kaden Fuhrmann, narrowing the gap to 22-19.

The Lakers managed to stay within reach as Deshaun Jackson Jr. contributed four points from the free-throw line, reducing the Wildcats' advantage. However, Northwestern ended the half on a high note with a last-second jumper, concluding the half with a 36-25 lead over the Lakers.

Mercyhurst battled to close the gap in the second half despite several key plays. Blunt once again established the scoring with a jumper assisted by Lemelman, but Northwestern maintained control with a series of successful field goals. The Lakers' defense, highlighted by blocks and steals, temporarily disrupted Northwestern's momentum, yet the home team responded effectively, keeping the Lakers at bay.

Lemelman contributed notably with multiple successful jumpers from the field, and Jackson Jr. added a fast-break layup following a steal with ten minutes of game time remaining. Despite these efforts, Northwestern's lead remained firm, and the half concluded with a score 70-47 in favor of the Wildcats.

Lemelman led the team with 14 points, shooting 6-for-13 from the field. Jackson Jr. played a key role defensively, recording four steals and adding six points and six rebounds. Johnson contributed with five points, three rebounds, and two blocks. Mykolas Ivanauskas added depth with six points and eight rebounds.

Next, the Lakers prepare for their second matchup in the windy city against Loyola Chicago on Thursday, November 6 scheduled for an 9:00 PM (ET) tip-off.
