Gravel Makes 36 Saves as Men's Ice Hockey Ties RMU

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team (0-14-1, 0-8-1) and  RMU (3-9-2, 3-2-1) skated to a 1–1 tie, with neither team finding the net in overtime. The Lakers' lone goal came on a power play in the second period, while Charles-Edward Gravel made 36 saves to keep the game level.

The first period commenced with the Lakers establishing early offensive pressure, as Lukas Klemm and Trent Sambrook each tested the Robert Morris goalie. Despite consistent attempts, including efforts from Tyler DesRochers and Dominik Bartecko, the Lakers were unable to find the back of the net. 

Defensively, Gravel stood firm for the Lakers, making several key saves to keep the Colonials off the scoreboard during a penalty kill and throughout the frame. With both teams unable to capitalize on their chances, the period concluded scoreless, maintaining a 0–0 tie.

The Lakers capitalized on an early power play in the second period, with Christian Kocsis scoring at 14:38, assisted by Jacob Leblanc and Bartecko. This goal came after the Lakers took control on the faceoff, setting the tone for a period where they maintained the lead. Despite numerous attempts from the Colonials, Gravel's goaltending kept them off the scoreboard.

As the period progressed, the Lakers continued to apply pressure, controlling the puck and winning crucial faceoffs. The defensive efforts, including blocked shots by John Larkin and Barrett Brooks, ensured that the Lakers held onto their 1-0 lead at the end of the second period.

The Green and Blue began the third period with defensive resilience as Gravel made key saves to keep Robert Morris at bay. Francesco Iasenza and Larkin were instrumental in blocking shots, maintaining the defensive stand. The Lakers saw multiple attempts, but the netminder of Robert Morris denied each effort.

Despite the Lakers' strong defensive play, the Colonials capitalized at 15:34 with a game-tying goal. The game remained tied at 1-1 as the third period closed, with neither team able to find a breakthrough in the final minutes.

The overtime period began with Robert Morris controlling the faceoff, but the Lakers' defense remained steadfast. Brendan Lamb effectively blocked a key shot, maintaining the scoreless status. 

Gravel made a crucial save on an overtime attempt, keeping the game in balance. Despite a late offensive effort by Kocsis, whose shot was blocked, the period concluded without a goal. The game remained tied as overtime ended.

The game transitioned into a shootout, with the Lakers' Bartecko successfully converting the team's first attempt against RMU. The Colonials responded in kind for the home side, maintaining the level pegging. Kocsis then found the net for the Lakers, but the Colonials matched it to keep the contest tight.

The shootout continued with Andrew LeBlanc and J.Leblanc missing their respective chances, while the Colonials secured the final successful attempt. The game concluded with RMU narrowly edging the Lakers in the shootout, with the final tally reflecting a tied score of 1–1 in regulation.

Kocsis scored a goal on the power-play, making a significant impact on the scoreboard. J.LeBlanc contributed with one assist, demonstrating his playmaking ability. Gravel posted 36 saves, providing strong support in net. Bartecko recorded an assist, contributing to the team's offensive efforts.

The Lakers will travel to Holy Cross Saturday, December 6 as they face the Crusaders in their final game of 2025.
