Lakers Secure First Division I Win Over New Haven

WEST HAVEN, Conn. — Mercyhurst field hockey secured a 2-1 victory over the University of New Haven with two fourth-quarter goals powered by two freshman, overcoming an early deficit in a tense match on the road.

The game commenced with both teams setting up their defensive plays. Despite multiple penalty corners awarded to the Chargers, the Lakers' goalkeeper Louise Pert made several pivotal saves, maintaining a solid defense. However, New Haven netted their lone goal of the game six minutes into the first. The Lakers managed to generate offensive opportunities, including a shot by Ava Jones saved by the Chargers, but could not find the back of the net. The quarter concluded with the Chargers leading 1-0.

The second quarter saw the Lakers applying offensive pressure, highlighted by multiple attempts on goal. Hailey Hatfield's effort was thwarted by New Haven. Marina Evert also challenged the defense with two shots, both saved by the Chargers. Despite these attempts, the quarter concluded without a change in score, with New Haven maintaining their 1-0 lead.

The Lakers faced a challenging third quarter as they aimed to level the game against the Chargers. Despite several fouls early in the quarter, the team created scoring opportunities, notably when Finja Wunner initiated a penalty corner. Maddie Huffer and Evert each took shots, with Huffer's attempt going wide and Evert's saved. The quarter concluded without a change in the score, leaving the Lakers trailing 1-0.

In the fourth quarter, the Lakers capitalized on a penalty corner sequence to shift momentum. After a series of blocked shots, Hailey Hatfield scored her first career goal, bringing the score to a 1-1 tie. The Lakers continued to apply pressure, and Alyssa Laubach found the back of the net for her first career goal, securing a 2-1 lead five minutes after tying it up. Despite several fouls, the Lakers maintained their advantage. The game concluded with a victory for the Lakers, final score 2-1.

The Lakers wrap up their season Sunday, November 2 at Lock Haven slated for a 12:00 PM start.
