Trobel Records Second Three Touchdown Game; Lakers Sail to 19-7 Victory at Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Mercyhurst football improved to 2-0 in NEC league play, earning a 19-7 win at Wagner Saturday afternoon. Senior running back Brian Trobel led the way with 196 all purpose yards and three touchdowns on the day. Today's contest was the second time this season Trobel posted three touchdowns in a game.

Trobel is the first Laker to record more than 190 all purpose yards since Garrett Owens tallied 218 in a 57-10 win over Clarion on Nov. 9, 2019.

The Lakers got out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter courtesy of a 3-yard touchdown run from Trobel, following a missed field goal attempt on the first Seahawks drive of the game. The Lakers went 80 yards on 17 plays, spanning 9:14 of game time to get on the board first.

The Seahawks responded, finding the endzone for the first and only time of the day on the following drive, taking a 7-6 lead on the made extra point attempt with 2:32 remaining in the opening half.

Mercyhurst quicky answered with a one play 76-yard drive as quarterback Alex Gevaudan found Trobel downfield, giving the Lakers a 12-7 advantage. The 76-yard play is the longest play from scrimmage in the NEC this season.

The Lakers defense came up with a stop to end the half as Wagner turned the ball over on downs, with Jake Miller making the TFL on 4th-and-1.

Wagner got the ball to start the second half of action, but on the fifth play of the drive, Adonis Marshall forced and recovered a fumble to give the Lakers the ball back with 12:56 on the game clock.

The Lakers failed to capitalize on the turnover, punting the ball away after six plays. The Green and Blue defense stood tall once again, forcing a 3-and-out from the Seahawks as Jonas King recorded a sack on 3rd-and-5.

Trobel did it all by himself on the next scoring drive for the Lakers carrying the ball for seven plays in a row, including a 22-yard gain after hurdling over his defender. The drive ended with the Ohio native diving into the endzone for the 4-yard touchdown and his third of the day.

Mercyhurst's defense finished the game strong, forcing two punts and a turnover on downs to end the game. The defense had their most sacks of season with four. Kyler Laing and King recorded season-highs with 2.5 and 1.5 respectively.

Mercyhurst quarterback Alex Gevaudan finished the game completing 13-of-24 pass attempts for 191 yards and one touchdown. He was protected well by the Laker offensive line who did not give up a sack in the contest.
