ERIE, Pa. — Mercyhurst University fell 1-0 to Stonehill College in a hard-fought match at Saxon Stadium, despite a valiant defensive effort and a standout performance by goalkeeper Rhyden Wheldon.
From the opening whistle, the Lakers set a strong defensive tone. Wheldon made three early saves to keep Stonehill off the board, while Mercyhurst generated promising offensive opportunities. A penalty corner from Lola Williams led to a shot by Jen Kemp that went just wide, and Hailey Hatfield forced a key save from the Skyhawks keeper. Both teams pushed forward but ended the first quarter scoreless.
In the second quarter, the Lakers continued to shine defensively. Delaney Lentz came up with a clutch defensive save following a Stonehill penalty corner, and Wheldon denied several more scoring attempts. Offensively, Mercyhurst kept applying pressure, earning another penalty corner that narrowly missed. Mercyhurst opened the third quarter on the attack. Marina Evert launched a shot that forced a save, followed by another strong chance from Lentz off a penalty corner by Kemp. The Lakers continued to limit Stonehill's offense with disciplined play and key saves from Wheldon, who turned away attempts consecutive attempts from the Skyhawks. Despite both teams trading fouls and opportunities, the deadlock remained unbroken entering the final quarter.
The fourth quarter saw Mercyhurst's defense tested under heavy pressure. Wheldon was again outstanding, making multiple crucial saves to keep the Skyhawks at bay. Lentz added another defensive stop as the Lakers dug deep. However, Stonehill finally broke through late in the quarter, scoring the lone goal of the game despite the Lakers' best efforts. Mercyhurst continued to push for an equalizer, defending against a series of penalty corners and launching counterattacks, but the match ended with the Skyhawks narrowly ahead.
