9/6/2024 9:05:00 AM

Erie, Pa- After solidifying their first win as a Division I program against Wheeling University, Mercyhurst travels to D.C to face their first DI opponent in Howard University, which is set to start on Saturday, September 7th on ESPN+ at 7:00 p.m. The Lakers are looking to build momentum and secure their second win of the season under the leadership of Head Coach Ryan Riemedio.

A Look Back

Mercyhurst battled to the last whistle and prevailed against Wheeling University last Thursday, outscoring the opposition 28-25. In the game's final minutes, the Lakers retrieved Wheeling's onside kick and ran out the clock.

In the first week of action, Mercyhurst excelled in key stats- first downs, rushing yards, passing yards and total yards. Adam Urena was efficient, completing 21 of 31 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns. Cameron Barmore led the receiving corps with eight catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Brian Trobel added 76 yards on nine touches, while Ernest Davis III tallied 13 carries for 55 yards.

Defensively, Tyler Buterbaugh led the team with 8 tackles, while teammate Will Thomas IV and Zach Hill each had six tackles.

Scouting the Bisons

Howard is looking to get their first win of the season against the Lakers after coming off a 44-7 decision against the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers University. This will be the first contest between the two schools. Despite a strong early performance by Eden James's touchdown to close the gap to 14-7, it was not enough to keep pace with the Scarlet Knights. The team looks to turn to their graduate All American safety Kenny Gallop Jr. on the defensive side of the line, while Quarterback Ja'Shawn Scroggins piggybacks off his strong debut with 67 rushing yards and 116 passing yards on the offensive side.

Next Game

The Lakers will travel to Robert Morris and Montana State to round out their play in September. The Lakers will face off against Robert Morris on September 14th at 12:00 p.m. and Montana State on September 21st at 3:00 p.m.
