Lakers Fall to Rider in Season Opener

Lawrenceville, NJ- Mercyhurst Field Hockey played their first Division I game and first conference game of the season on Sunday afternoon. They fell to Rider University with a final score of 0-7. 

How it Happened

Rider took the lead early in the first quarter, scoring two goals within a few minutes of each other to make the score 0-2 going into the second quarter. The theme was the same in the second quarter as Rider scored three more goals. Sophomore Rachel Kosowski had one shot on goal, but it was deflected by the Broncs. Going into the half, Rider was up 0-5 on Mercyhurst. 

The Lakers gave a good effort in the third quarter, holding Rider to no goals, which set up a scoreless quarter. Mercyhurst fought hard in the fourth quarter with one shot attempt by freshman Delaney Lentz but came up short as Rider turned it away. The Broncs scored again in the middle of the fourth quarter and slipped in one more goal with about a minute left to end the game with a final score of 0-7. Junior Jen Kemp racked up three defensive saves and Senior Goalkeeper Kayla Desormeau ended the game with a total of 26 saves.
