5/7/2024 12:00:00 PM

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Lakers, fresh off their GMAC Championship victory, are set to continue their postseason journey as they face Pace University in the first round of the NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse Tournament. This Wednesday's matchup will see the 5th-seeded Lakers travel to Pleasantville, N.Y., to take on a formidable Pace team that holds an impressive 12-4 record this season.

Season and Tournament Implications

The Lakers ended their conference play undefeated and clinched the GMAC title with a thrilling 12-9 win over Seton Hill. With a season record of 13-4, they have demonstrated resilience and strategic prowess under pressure, qualities they will need against Pace. This game is crucial not only for progressing in the NCAA tournament but also for setting the tone of Mercyhurst's national championship aspirations.

Pace University: A Closer Look

Pace University enters the tournament with a solid 12-3 record, having recently faced a narrow 11-12 loss against Saint Anselm. They boast a high-powered offense averaging 15.4 goals per game, with standout players like Ryan Kemp, who has amassed 78 points this season, and Declan Landers contributing significantly to their scoring efforts. Pace's aggressive play and ability to perform in clutch situations pose a notable challenge.

Key Players and Matchup Dynamics

  • Mercyhurst: Ethan Landymore and Colin Tardif, who have been crucial in the Lakers' offensive setup, will need to penetrate Pace's defense effectively. Goalkeeper Brett Olney, with a save percentage of .513, will be vital in thwarting Pace's sharpshooters.

  • Pace: Ryan Kemp's all-around play and Daniel Zabbia's scoring touch will be central to Pace's strategy to overcome Mercyhurst's defense. Their goalie, Jack Kern, who has a .505 save percentage, will be tested against the Lakers' diverse attacking options.

Strategic Outcomes

This matchup will likely hinge on which team can better control the pace and apply pressure effectively. Mercyhurst's balanced attack and solid defense, combined with their ability to convert on man-up opportunities, give them a slight edge. However, Pace's ability to score heavily and their recent tight games suggest they are well-prepared for high-stakes situations.

Coach's Perspective

Coach Trey Keeley of Mercyhurst highlighted the importance of the game, stating, "I'm excited for another day competing with these men. We have a lot of veteran leadership that is showing itself late in the year. Pace has a very good team this year and I am excited for the challenge."

Game Day Expectations

As both teams prepare for this crucial encounter, the excitement and tension are palpable. Fans from both sides are gearing up to support their teams, hoping for a victory that would propel them into the next round of the NCAA tournament. The game promises to be a showcase of skill, strategy, and the sheer will to win, setting up what could be one of the most exciting matches of the tournament.
