Box Score 2 Erie, PA- The Mercyhurst softball team returned to action this afternoon after a couple of mid-week cancellations. Taking on the Golden Knights of Gannon, the Lakers worked another split, losing the first game 10-2, but winning the second 13-5.
How it Happened:
Game One
Benefiting from a couple of errors and a timely single, the Golden Knights struck first in the bottom of the first inning to grab an early 3-0 lead. Gannon was able to add to their lead throughout the 2nd and 3rd innings to double their lead and extend the score to 7-0.
The Laker bats finally came alive in the top half of the 4th inning. Eliza Reynolds singled to start the inning and was pinch ran for by Brynna King. King later came around to score off a single from Marisa Cartellone to make the score 7-1.
Gannon erased the run in the bottom half of the fourth to extend the lead back to 7. The Golden Knights didn't let up there, as they tallied two more runs to put the game out of reach, 10-2.
Bailey Cannon recorded two hits for Mercyhurst, which included a double and an RBI. Marisa Cartellone also singled and tallied an RBI in the loss.
Game Two
The second game of the doubleheader favored the Lakers, as the offense exploded for 13 runs. Mercyhurst didn't waste any time as Madison Fry-Fachet doubled to lead off the game. Neena Pietripaolo and Eliza Reynolds then singled before Brianne Egelston walked to bring in the first run of the game. Gannon responded with 4 runs of their own in the first, but it was all Mercyhurst for the remainder of the contest.
As the top of the order came around again in the 3rd, Mercyhurst scored 4 more runs on 4 hits and only left one runner on base. The 5-4 lead was extended in the 5th and 6th innings as Mercyhurst scored 8 more runs on 10 hits, which was highlighted by a Francesca Latino grand slam homerun.
Despite a strong effort to find their way back in the game, the Gannon offense was shut down. Morgan Hilty put together a solid performance, pitching 5.1 innings while striking out a pair.
Offensively, Mercyhurst had 5 hitters who recorded multiple hits in the game.
