Softball Settles for Split with Edinboro

Edinboro, PA- Entering the final stretch of regular season play, the Mercyhurst Lakers and the Edinboro Fighting Scot's squared off today for what was a crucial doubleheader in terms of postseason seeding. The Lakers won game one, 6-4, but fell short in game two 9-1.

How it Happened

Game One

After a scoreless 1st inning, Brianne Egelston put the Lakers on the board with a solo shot to right center field. The Fighting Scot's responded in the home half of the 2nd inning with a run of their own, but Mercyhurst regained the lead in the 3rd thanks to an RBI single from Eliza Reynolds. Bailey Cannon then laced a single up the middle, which allowed another run to score to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Lakers.

Edinboro cut the lead to 1 in the third and were threatening to tie, but Alexa North and company were able to get out of the inning with the lead intact. The Fighting Scot's then tied the game in the fourth, 3-3.

As Mercyhurst has done so many times before, they responded in a huge way in the 5th, thanks to a 2 out 2 RBI bomb from Bailey Cannon, her 8th of the season. The homerun put the Lakers back on top, 5-3 heading into the 6th. Both teams then put a run across in the 6th as Kacie Irwin tripled, making the score 6-4, which held as the final score.

Madison Fry-Fachet, Bailey Cannon, Francesca Latino, and Brynna King all recorded two hits apiece in game one.

Bailey Cannon and Brianne Egelston each homered, while Kacie Irwin tripled. Alexa North was effective from within the circle, throwing a complete game, while only allowing one earned run. North tallied 6 strikeouts in the win.

Game Two

The Fighting Scot's jumped out to an early lead in game two, plating 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. They found the scoreboard in the 3rd, 5th, and 6th innings as well, as the Fighting Scot's offense left no doubt in a 9-1 victory.

The lone Laker run came in the top of the 6th as Kacie Irwin came around to score on an Eliza Reynolds single.

Eliza Reynolds and Kacie Irwin led the Laker hitters in game two, as each went 2 for 3 from the plate.
