Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 California, PA- PSAC play began this afternoon as the Mercyhurst Softball team traveled to California, PA to take on the Vulcans of Cal. California got the best of the Lakers in the two-game series, winning game one 6-1 and game two, 6-5. Mercyhurst is now 4-11 overall.
How it Happened:
Game One
Despite two singles from Madison Fry-Fachet and Eliza Reynolds in the top half of the 1st inning, Mercyhurst couldn't push any runs across. Cal then took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning, benefiting from 3 walks. Mikaela Schramski settled in after the first inning to keep Cal scoreless in the bottom of the second inning.
As Cal came to the plate in the third, command continued to be an issue for the Lakers. Finding a few more bases on balls, the Vulcans scored on a wild pitch and plated two more runs on a single up the middle. The Vulcans added another run in the 5th inning to push the lead to 5.
Mercyhurst finally found the scoreboard in the top half of the 5th inning as Alexandra Acosta-Reyes singled and came around to score after a Madison Fry-Fachet single to center. All hopes of a late game comeback dwindled as the Vulcans added another run in the 6th to make the game 6-1, which held for a final score.
Highlights
Madison Fry-Fachet continued to be a bright spot for the Laker offense going 2 for 4 from the plate.
Game Two
Morgan Hilty started game two for Mercyhurst and quieted the Vulcans through the first inning of play. The Vulcans put together another big inning in the second, plating 4 runs on 5 hits and 1 error. Mercyhurst couldn't seem to string anything together through the first three innings of play as the deficit grew to 5.
Cal added another run in the 4th, but Bailey Cannon kept the Lakers alive with a 2-run blast to left center to make the score 6-2 in the 5th. Marisa Cartellone then came alive in the 6th as she smacked a double to score Mercyhurst's 3rd run of the game. The Lakers didn't stop there. After a Francesca Latino single, Madison Fry-Fachet came through with an RBI to bring Mercyhurst within 2.
Keeping the deficit at 2 heading into the top of the 7th, Bailey Cannon did it again. Hitting her second homerun of the game, Cannon helped pull the Lakers within one, but that's as close as they'd get as the Vulcans escaped with a 6-5 victory.
Highlights
Bailey Cannon launched not one, but two homeruns, to go along with 3RBIs. Brianne Egelston, Madison Fry-Fachet, and Francesca Latino all collected two hits for the Lakers.
