California, PA- Despite a mid-week double header getting postponed this week, the Mercyhurst Softball team is gearing up for a full slate of games with doubleheaders against Cal U, Seton Hill, and Slippery Rock. Games will take place on Friday, March 22nd, Saturday, March 23rd, and Tuesday, March 26th.

Scouting Cal U.

Coming into the matchup with a losing record, Cal U has had a rough start to the 2024 season. In 2023, Cal went 27-24 and 19-13 in conference play. In the 4-game series last year, the Lakers and Vulcans split and took two games apiece. So far this year, the Vulcans are led by Caleigh Rister and Britney Wilson, who are both hitting over .400. Alyssa Rose leads the team in innings and has secured both wins for the squad so far this season.

Scouting Seton Hill

The Griffins are another team that is well rounded and capable of putting together 20+ win seasons year in and year out. Both combine for 78 strikeouts and a sub .300 batting average against. Offensively, the Griffins are led by 4 hitters who post batting averages over .400. As a team, Seton Hill has outscored their opponents 155-87. The Griffins also provide plenty of power, totaling 73 extra base hits already this year.

Scouting Slippery Rock

Slippery Rock is another team that's had a slow start to the season, posting a 7-12 record at the time of publishing. Offense has been stagnant for the Rock, and only Arielle Brown hits for an average of over .300. Despite the slow start offensively, Slippery Rock does post a 2.68 ERA, which keeps them in a lot of games.

Laker Leaders

The Lakers come into the week with a 4-9 record, having most recently split with Notre Dame College. Mercyhurst is led by Madison Fry-Fachet, who is hitting .364 on the year. Eliza Reynolds and Marisa Cartellone also provide power from within the box, having tallied three doubles and two homeruns in the young year. The Lakers will continue to lean on Mikaela Schramski from within the circle, who leads the Lakers in innings pitched. Schramski has struck out 20 batters in 6 appearances.

Up Next

Mercyhurst will hit the road next weekend, March 29th, and head to the University of Pitt Johnstown and Indiana University of Pennsylvania for another 4-game set.
