Mercyhurst Wraps Their Opening Weekend

Nashville, Tn. — The Mercyhurst Stunt team wrapped their weekend down at Trevecca Nazarene University, where they played their first games in program history. They went 3-1 on the weekend overall, with all the teams they faced being first year programs as well.

Their first matchup on day one was Malone University. The Lakers looked dominant to start the game, shutting out their opponent in the first half and earning a 5-0 lead through Partner Stunts and Pyramid & Tosses quarters. The shutout eventually came to an end in the third quarter, jumps and tumbling, when both teams were awarded a point on round 3. It eventually became a runaway with Mercyhurst doubling their lead to 18-1 with an impressive showing in Team Routines, earning 3 points apiece when they preformed routines 1 and 2 in the middle of the quarter.

With a win under their belt, they went on the face the home side, Trevecca Nazarene in the second game of the day. The Trojans were ranked #2 in the GMAC coming into the season and they proved to be a worthy adversary. The Lakers first point wouldn't come until the first round of the second quarter, but eventually went down 8-1 at halftime. Mercyhurst looked good int the third quarter after earning two points, but each time they got on the board, the Trojans were also awarded a point. It eventually ended in a 24-3 loss for the Lakers.

Day two got off to a hot start as they took on Baldwin Wallace in their early game. The Yellow Jackets opted out of a majority of the routines in the first half, giving Mercyhurst a clear route to a 3-0 advantage. The Lakers preformed phenomenally in both the third and fourth quarters, earning a point in all of the remaining rounds. They collected an additional 10 points with Baldwin Wallace not being able to get on the board, solidifying a 13-0 finish and the first victory in the program history.

They finished off their weekend with a game against Walsh University. The Lakers yet again were commanding over their opponent, claiming a 4-0 advantage after the first two quarters of play. Walsh wouldn't get on the board until the second round of the third quarter, in which both teams were awarded a point. Mercyhurst captured a point in every round of the quarter making it 8-2 heading into the final quarter of play. They ended up bringing their total to 15 and Walsh was only able to secure 1 other point to make it a 15-3 finish.

Senior captain Grace Gregoire lead the team in scoring this weekend with 48 point contributions over the four games. Chassadi Waite and Jayna Phillips were not far behind with a total of 46 point contributions each.

The Lakers will be back on the mats next weekend with a three games. They'll play host to Trevecca Nazarene, Hiram College, and Ursuline College.
