Erie, PA- The Mercyhurst Stunt team took on the nationally ranked Ashland Eagles this afternoon, as the two teams competed in an afternoon doubleheader. Despite great effort, the Lakers fell short of the Eagles in both games by scores of 23-0 and 14-1. Mercyhurst is now 4-5 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
How it Happened:
Game One
The Lakers began the game by winning the toss and chose to take possession. The Eagles were able to get on the board first, winning the first round of partner stunts. Ashland doubled the lead after taking round two and seemed to find their stride to end the first quarter, sweeping the first quarter and taking a 4-0 lead.
As pyramids and tosses got underway, the Eagles continued to string together efficient rounds. Ashland won the first round by decision before a Mercyhurst forfeiture in round two. The Eagles then went on to earn points in each of the last two rounds of the quarter, bringing the overall score to 8-0 heading into halftime.
As the second half started, Ashland created significant separation through their jumps and tumbling routines, sweeping the quarter to make the score 12-0. Team routines followed, which saw the Eagles take complete control of the game. Snagging some additional points in the fourth quarter, Ashland put a stamp on the first game, winning 23-0.
Game Two
Ashland picked up where they left off in game two by taking every round in quarter one, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. As the two teams continued into pyramids and tosses, the Eagles built a cushion by earning another point in the second quarter to make their lead 4-0 heading into halftime.
As the second half began, Ashland remained synchronized and gained two more points heading into the final frame. The Eagles controlled the team routines but Mercyhurst found the scoreboard with their first point of the day, but the deficit was too large to overcome as Ashland ended with a 14-1 win.
