Lakers Prepare for Crucial Week of PSAC Play

2/20/2024 11:30:00 AM

Erie, PA- The Mercyhurst Women's Basketball team climbed a few spots in the PSAC West standings last week with a crucial win over Seton Hill University. The week ahead carries an equal amount of importance as the Lakers host Gannon University on Wednesday, February 21st, and travel to California University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, February 24th. Mercyhurst enters the week with an overall record of 16-8 and a conference record of 12-6.

Scouting Gannon

Having dropped a game to Gannon early in the year, Mercyhurst is motivated to grab another win at home. With that said, it won't be an easy task to complete as Gannon ranks among the best teams in the entire country. Bringing in a 26-2 record, the Golden Knights are led by Samantha Pirosko, who averages 18.9 points per game to go along with 7.2 rebounds per game. Pirosko has scored 20 or more points 11 times this year. Bri Claxton also adds an offensive component to the Gannon attack, averaging 13.6 points per game. As a team, Gannon ranks second in the conference in offense and 1st in the conference in team defense. Pirosko is the head of the snake. In the first meeting, she went for 35 and 8.

Scouting Cal U.

Averaging 66.8 points per game, Cal U is currently ranked third in the PSAC West with a 14-4 conference record. The Vulcans rely heavily upon Dejah Terrell, who averages 15.3 points per game. The first meeting between the two teams was one for the history books, as it took overtime to find a victor. Terrell led the Vulcans to victory with 24 points, she also went a prefect 10-10 from the free throw line. Fans are in store for another good one in California on Saturday.

Laker Leaders

Mercyhurst is out to avenge two earlier season losses to the two teams on the docket this week. Bailey Kuhns and Danielle Grim remain consistent for the Lakers, as both average double digits offensively. The bench is the story entering this week. Down one of their leaders in Lauren Klare, Mercyhurst will look to some of their role players to provide a spark. Allyson Ross and Grace Clary have done a great job contributing minutes off the bench. Julia Buchman and Paige Woodford have also been steady and have gained momentum from beyond the arc. Despite the big loss to Gannon the first time around, both games this week have the potential to be classics.
