Box Score

Edinboro, PA- Going a week without games, the Mercyhurst Women's Basketball team returned to action this evening as they made the quick trip to Edinboro University to take on the Fighting Scot's. Entering the matchup with a conference record of 11-5, the Lakers fell short of the Scot's 63-49 and will return home on Saturday, February 21st.

How it Happened

It was a slow start to the game as each team committed numerous turnovers to start the quarter. Ava Waid and Bailey Kuhns found their footing two minutes into the game as each converted to get the Lakers going offensively. Jenna Van Schaik then scored 5 consecutive points to give the Lakers a two-point lead, 9-7. Mercyhurst then fell behind by 3 points, but Maria McConnell knocked down a pair of free throws to bring them within one as the first quarter came to an end.

Edinboro began the second quarter with a 10-2 run, extending their lead to 9. Shots by Maria McConnell and Julia Buchman kept the Lakers afloat, but the Scot's built their lead to 12 as the two teams went into halftime. The Lakers shot only 24.1% from the field in the half, and just 20% from long range.

The Lakers came out of the locker room exactly the way they needed to. Julia Buchman and Bailey Kuhns found the score sheet early in the quarter as the lead dwindled to 5 for the home team. Just as Mercyhurst seemed to turn a corner, the Scot's resurfaced to build out the lead once again as the cushion ballooned back to 10. Despite two three-pointers, courtesy of Danielle Grim, the third quarter ended 48-38.

The Lakers refused to go away as the fourth quarter got underway. Julia Buchman hit 2 three-pointers to get Mercyhurst within six. Danielle Grim then came up big once again with a long ball to bring the lead to just 5. The Laker run didn't last long enough however as the Scot's hit some big shots down the stretch to put the game out of reach.

Highlights

Julia Buchman led all Lakers scorers with 14 points. Danielle Grim was all over the place, per usual, as she collected 12 points 9 rebounds and 5 steals.
