Moon Township, Pa - Mercyhurst Falls Short in a Tough Game Against RMU
How It Happened:
The Lakers had a dominant first half in Moon Township, Pa. this afternoon, starting the first quarter off with a 3 pointer sunk by Grace Clary in the first 20 seconds. Mercyhurst continued their consistent scoring efforts, seeing points made from Allyson Ross, Jenna Van Schaik, and Bailey Kuhns. Holding the RMU Colonials to 13 points in the first quarter, the Lakers were able to draw multiple offensive fouls and lead in rebounds as well, holding possession for the majority of the quarter.
These efforts continued into the second quarter as the Lakers remained on top. Though Robert Morris attempted to close the gap, it was not enough to overcome Mercyhurst, who still controlled the game offensively. Clary started the Lakers off again in the second quarter with the feed from Cici Hernandez, followed by Kuhns and Van Schaik, both going 2 for 2 from the free throw line. Great plays were also made by Ross, whose creativity made a massive impact on the game in the first half. She was able to get on the board from multiple scrappy plays and made her mark defensively as well, contributing heavily to RMU's inability to finish. The Lakers went into halftime leading the game, 31-26.
The second half proved more challenging for the Lakers as RMU came out of the break with some momentum. Though the Lakers remained consistent offensively and defensively, this half was more back-and-forth from a scoring perspective, until RMU pulled away in the fourth quarter. Though the Lakers never let up, this was not enough to earn the win today. The final score of today's game was 69-49.
Highlights:
Jenna Van Schaik led the Lakers in points this afternoon, putting up 14. She was followed by Bailey Kuhns with 13 and Allyson Ross and Grace Clary who both earned 8. Multiple Lakers put up great defensive efforts as well today, including Kuhns who led in rebounds, and Ross and Clary who each had a block and two steals.
