How It Happened
Coming off of their 109-point game on Sunday, the Lakers went into the first quarter of this game looking to remain aggressive on the attack. Mercyhurst opened scoring this afternoon with back-to-back threes shot by Cici Hernandez and Grace Clary. For the remainder of the first quarter, scoring was back and forth between the two teams; however, Bailey Kuhns's physicality going to the rim kept the Lakers in the game. She closed the quarter with eight points. The score going into the second quarter was tied, 15-15.
Kuhns kept up this impactful performance in the second quarter, scoring seven more points for the Lakers. Cornell answered, pulling away to a ten-point lead, but critical shots made by Grace Clary and Singo Lekeuneu helped cut it to a six-point differential by the end of the second quarter. The final score of the first half was 33-27, Cornell leading.
Mercyhurst fought offensively and defensively from the start of the third quarter. Bailey Kuhns, Grace Clary, and Jenna Van Schaik were dominant across the board, winning rebounds under both nets and finding success from the paint and the free-throw line. Lauryn Stover also made a critical play at the end of the quarter, scoring a clutch jumper, adding to the Laker's 8-0 point run. Mercyhurst took advantage of every opportunity to score this quarter, taking the lead by the end of the ten minutes. The final score of the third quarter was 45-41, Mercyhurst.
In a thriller of a fourth quarter, scoring remained back and forth between Mercyhurst and Cornell, both teams fighting for the lead the entirety of the ten minutes. The Lakers battled it out until the end, Kuhns tying the game 55-55 with a layup in the last twenty seconds. Overtime proved no different than the rest of the game for the Lakers, scoring being even between the two teams. Despite great plays by Kuhns and Van Schaik, their efforts were not enough as Mercyhurst fell to Cornell by one point. The final score of the game was 64-63.
Highlights
Bailey Kuhns led the Lakers in rebounds and points again today with an impressive 32 points. She was followed by Jenna Van Schaik who totaled 12 points. The Lakers as a whole lead the game today in both rebounds and in three-point percentage.
