The Lakers Secure Their First Win of the Season Against Davis and Elkins

Erie, PA.- The Mercyhurst Women's Basketball team faced off against the Davis and Elkins Senators, earning their first win of the season. The final score was 67-51. 



How it Happened: 

The Lakers struck first this evening with a three-pointer made by graduate student, Grace Clary. Mercyhurst continued the intensity throughout the remainder of the first quarter with crucial defensive plays, such as a steal by #10 Cici Hernandez as well as a dominant performance under the rim with the Lakers leading in rebounds. Mercyhurst also came out hungry on the attack in the first quarter. Five Lakers got on the board, with junior guard, Jenna Van Schaik leading. Mercyhurst led 21-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Hot off the lead, Mercyhurst came out in the second quarter with the same fire, opening scoring with a great play from Ross to Clary to Kuhns, who put up a critical layup. The Lakers also made a huge impact from the line, shooting at eighty percent. Davis and Elkins attempted to close the gap this quarter, but their efforts were not enough. Mercyhurst held onto their lead, finishing the half 31-29. 

The third quarter was a battle between the Lakers and the Senators for the lead. Scoring was back and forth for the entirety of the ten minutes. However, Mercyhurst came out on top yet again thanks to consistent efforts on offense from #34 Bailey Kuhns and #11 Alena Fusseti who were critical scorers. The Lakers pulled away in the last few minutes of this quarter, up 44-36. 

In the final quarter of the game, freshman, Cici Hernandez made her mark on the court, scoring back-to-back three-pointers and then a layup. She continued to lead the charge offensively as she scored another layup then a three later in the quarter. Mercyhurst never lost steam and were relentless in the final minutes of this game to secure the Laker win. The final score of tonight's game was 67-51. 


Highlights:

Junior forward, Bailey Kuhns led the team in points this evening putting up sixteen total. She was followed by freshman, Cici Hernandez who had ten. Grace Strickland had a solid defensive effort tonight, earning eight rebounds. 

The Lakers lead the game in aspects other than points, including field goals made, three-point percentage, free throw percentage, assists, and rebounds.

The Lakers travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, to take on the Xavier University Musketeers on Friday, November 15th, at 7:00 p.m.
