Mercyhurst vs Chicago State

Lakers Fight Back for Tie at Home

10/24/2024 3:48:00 PM

Box Score Erie, Pa.- The Mercyhurst Women's Soccer team fought back to earn a tie against Chicago State on Thursday afternoon. The Lakers found themselves down by one with just under two minutes left, but Isabella Fiorillo buried the tying goal to help them earn a point in conference play.

How it Happened:
Mercyhurst and Chicago State were deadlocked after 45 minutes action, but it was the Lakers who seemed as if they had the upper hand in the first half. They had 13 shots in the first period, five of which were taken by Graduate Student Emily Mijares. But they just couldn't capitalize, even in a situation where they recorded three shots in 15 seconds. Chicago State goalkeeper Jay Arballo was solid in the first half and a big reason why the Lakers were kept off the board in the first.

Mercyhurst wasted little time in the second half getting on the board. Two minutes in, Senior Teagan Mehalko found Sophomore Maddie Sievering who bulleted one past Arballo. Less than 90 seconds later, Mijares gave the Lakers a 2-0 lead. But the Cougars answered with a goal of their own two minutes later. Jacqueline Tamayo chipped one past Graduate Student Chelsea Radicia. Hannah Bennett tied the game on a penalty kick, before Delaney Kenney scored to give them the lead. With just under two minutes remaining, Fiorillo scored the game tying goal to make sure that the Lakers wouldn't suffer their 11th loss of the 2024 season.

Highlights:
Mijares and Sievering continue to remain hot. Both of them scored once again to cement themselves as the Lakers leading goal scorers in 2024.

Next Game:
Mercyhurst takes on Stonehill at 3:30 p.m. this Sunday on the road. All the action can be caught on the NEC Front Row.
