Lakers Battle with #6 Cornell Ends in a Draw

Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Women's Ice Hockey team battled to a 0-0 draw against #6 Cornell but fell 1-0 in a shootout on Friday evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Both teams displayed strong defensive play, with goaltenders Jorden Mattison and Annelies Bergmann starring in a goaltending duel. 

How It Happened: 

Both teams were held scoreless through three periods and overtime, with Jorden Mattison making 41 saves for Mercyhurst and Annelies Bergmann stopping 34 shots for Cornell. Both teams had their chances, with Vanessa Upson and Sydney Pedersen hitting the post for the Lakers, while Cornell's Ashley Messier and Katie Chan created pressure at the other end. 

The game was decided in a shootout, where Cornell's Piper Grober scored the lone goal, securing the 1-0 shootout win for the Big Red. 

Notable Performances: 

  • Jorden Mattison was stellar in net, stopping 41 shots, including multiple saves in overtime.  Those 41 saves were the second most in a game in her career.   

Up Next: 

The Lakers will look to bounce back in their next matchup as they continue their series against #6 Cornell tomorrow afternoon. Puck drop is set for 1:00 PM.
