Erie, PA-Days after solidifying themselves into the Mercyhurst Women's Basketball history books, the team now heads to Indiana, PA to take on a western conference foe in IUP. The Lakers are currently 11-2 overall and 7-0 in conference play.
Scouting IUP
IUP comes into the matchup with a 9-2 overall record and a conference record of 5-1. The Crimson Hawks have dropped games to only Fairmount State and Lock Haven University, both of which are ranked regionally.
Led by senior guard, Rahmena Henderson, IUP scores 73.5 points a game and shoots it at a 46% clip. Henderson leads all scorers for the Crimson Hawks averaging 17.1 points per game. Teirra Preston and Nyshae Weaver supplement Henderson in scoring, as both average over 10 points per game. Not only do Weaver and Preston put the ball in the basket, but they lead the team in rebounding, averaging 9.2 and 8.4 rebounds per game.
Having had countless battles against one another over the years, Mercyhurst and IUP most recently split, as both won on the road in 2022-23.
Laker Leaders
Bailey Kuhns and Danielle Grim are the Lakers primary scorers. Bailey Kuhns currently averages 15.8 points a game to go along with 4.7 rebounds. Kuhns brings a skill set around the rim that is tough to stop. Danielle Grim is a great back court compliment to Kuhns. On the year, Grim is averaging 13.3 points per game to go along with 8.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists. Grim also leads the team in blocks and steals so far this year.
Aside from Kuhns and Grim, other Lakers aren't strangers to the spotlight. Lauren Klare averages over 10 points a game and has had 19 and 18 points in two of the Laker wins this year. Julia Buchman can also fill it up, as she's been in double digits five times so far.
Next Game
After Wednesday's game, the Lakers will be off for a week before hosting Edinboro University on Wednesday January 17th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
