Lakers Grab Series Sweep of RIT with Five Unanswered Goals

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey team host RIT for game two of their weekend series. After going down 2-0 in the first period, the Lakers scored five unanswered goals to get a 5-2 win and a much-needed series sweep. The Lakers improved to 14-13-1 overall and 10-4 in the CHA.

How it Happened

A quiet first period for both sides for most of the first period. The Lakers had a few scoring opportunities early and late in the period but couldn't get anything to go. Late in the period, the Tigers scored twice, just 1:01 apart. After the first period, the Lakers trailed RIT 2-0.

During the first half of the second period, the Lakers controlled the puck throughout. At the 8:19 mark of the second period, the Lakers got on the board. After a scramble in front of the net, Marielle Parks took a shot that was saved, but Mary Kromer was able to find the loose puck in front of the net and punch it home. The Lakers now trailed 2-1. A game misconduct on the Tigers gave the Lakers a five-minute power play. After the tying goal was waived off, the Lakers came down the ice just seconds later and scored the tying goal. Sara Boucher gathered a rebound a fired it past the goaltender. Under a minute later Boucher scored again, giving the Lakers a 3-2 lead. On both Boucher goals, Vanessa Upson and Sydney Pedersen assisted. In the blink of an eye, the Lakers were in the lead. Through two periods of play, Ena Nystrøm made 16 saves.

A quiet start to the third period gave way to two Olivia Cvar goals, one at the 9:00 mark and the other at 14:49. Cvar ripped a wrist shot top shelf to extend the Lakers lead to 4-2. On the second goal, Chantal Ste-Croix found Thea Johansson on an outlet pass. Johansson went right for the net and at the last second, she dumped it off to Cvar, who beat the goaltender for the goal. The Lakers went up 5-2.
