North Canton, Oh. - Mercyhurst Volleyball team traveled to North Canton, Oh to take on Fairmont State and Walsh in a weekend tournament. The Lakers dropped the matchup against Fairmont State in three sets and dropped the matchup against Walsh in three sets.
How it Happened
In game one the Lakers faced Fairmont State. Alexa Mitchell got the scoring started for the Lakers with a service ace. A couple points later, Kaitlin Murphy added a couple of kills to keep the score within one. After some back and forth, Fairmont State was able to take an 11-7 lead. Kills by Kate Hennessy and Brielle Sterns kept the score close. Fairmont State was able to gain some momentum and go on a 6-0 run late in the set. The Lakers got a couple of points back, but Fairmont State was able to put the set away and take the win 25-14. Kate Hennessy got the scoring started for the Lakers in set two with a kill. The Lakers went on a 6-0 run to take an 11-8 lead in the second set. Fairmont tied it up at eleven. Kate Hennessy, Andrea Zaric, and Mevelyn Brazabon all had a kill to give them the lead 14-11. Fairmont State closed out set two on an 8-1 run. Fairmont took set two 25-19. The Lakers got out to a 5-2 lead on a kill from Kaitlin Murphy. After some back and forth the Lakers had the lead 11-7 on a kill from Kate Hennessy, and a service ace from Kaitlin Murphy. After that Fairmont State went on an 8-0 run to take the lead. It was now 16-13. The Lakers got the lead back on the back of Kate Hennessy. She had a kill, and back-to-back service aces. It wasn't enough as Fairmont State finished the set on a 7-1 run to close out the set and the match. Fairmont State won the match 3-0.
In game two the Lakers faced Walsh. Set one wasn't particularly close, as Walsh ran away with the set early. The set ended with Walsh on top 25-8. Andrea Zaric got the scoring started for the Lakers with a kill right out of the gate. After some back and forth the Lakers were able to take a 9-8 lead on a kill by Kate Hennessy. A few points later Corinne Bechtold added a kill of her own. This tied it all up at 12. Pagie Miller added a service ace to tie it up again at 14. Walsh went on a 6-0 run to make the score 20-14. The Lakers mounted a comeback with a service ace from Andrea Zaric, and a block from Kaitlin Murphy. The score was now 22-19. Walsh was able to close it out and win set two 25-20. Walsh jumped out to an early lead in set three. They found themselves with a 12-4 lead. The Lakers slowly crept back as they capitalized on the mistakes made by Walsh. It wasn't enough in the end as Walsh was able to close out set three 25-16 and take the match 3-0.

Kate Hennessy led the way in game one with eleven kills and two service aces. Alexa Mitchell had 15 assists. Paige Miller had 12 digs. Andrea Zaric led the way in game two with six kills. Alia Mastromatteo had two service aces. Kaitlin Murphy had two blocks.
Next Up
The Lakers will return home on September 16 to play their first home games of the season. They will play Bloomsburg at 10 AM, followed by Kutztown at 3 PM.
