Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst Football suffered their first loss of the season on Thursday, August 31st, against two-time reigning champions Ferris State. They'll be inside their friendly confines for week two as they are set to host the Bald Eagles on Saturday, September 9th, at 6:00 p.m.
Familiar Foe
The Lakers and Lock Haven are no strangers to one another with the two teams playing each other eight times prior to this matchup with Mercyhurst coming out on top in each contest. Most recently, Coach Riemedio and company grounded the Bald Eagles last season in game two by a final of 49-7. The Lakers hope for similar success this time around and extend their winning streak to nine.
Dazzling Debut
Mercyhurst featured a new quarterback against Ferris State in Adam Urena who began his time with the Lakers with a bang. The junior left threw for over 300 yards while completing 28 passes for the most by a Mercyhurst QB since the 2015 season when Zach Emeric completed 39. Urena surpassing 300Â yards marked the first time a Laker had thrown for over 300 since Joe Carter did it in 2021 when he notched 310 against Edinboro.
Air Raid
Urena's success benefited multiple targets as three players finished the season opener with five or more catches. Cameron Barmore led the way with nine receptions for 105 yards while hauling in the lone receiving TD of the game. Rylan Davison finished with 74 yards on seven catches while Trevon Tate came up with 64 yards yards and five catches, giving Mercyhurst a plethora of options to attack the opposition's secondary.
Friendly Confines
Saxon Stadium has been a place the Lakers hope to find more success going forward. Since the beginning of the 2018 season, Mercyhurst is 3-6 in non conference home games with their most recent win coming against Alderson Broaddus in the team's season opener for the 2021 season when the Lakers won 18-3. They'll look for better results from here on out and begin to establish a home field advantage.
Next Game
After Lock Haven comes to town, the Lakers are set to go back out on the road to see Kutztown. The Golden Bears host Mercyhurst on Saturday, September 16th, with kickoff set for noon.
