Women's Soccer Hopes to Build On Momentum

9/12/2023 11:00:00 AM

After dropping their season opener, the Mercyhurst Women's Soccer team has responded in a big way, winning three straight games bringing their overall record to 3-1. The Lakers now get set to host Slippery Rock University on Wednesday night before traveling across town to play Gannon University on Saturday night. Wednesday's game is set for 7:30 PM and Saturday's match is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

Behind stellar defense from the Lakers, the squad has now put together three shut out performances. They'll look to do the same against Slippery Rock University. Slippery Rock also enters the match with a 3-1 record. In 2022, the two teams tied twice and also squared off in the post season, with the Lakers coming away victorious with a 1-0 win. If history repeats itself, the match will be hard fought until the horn.

On Saturday, September 16th, The Lakers will head downtown and square off against their cross-town rivals for the first time this season. Gannon is currently 1-1-1 on the year, most recently defeating Edinboro University. Coming off a 15-4-4 season in 2022, the Golden Knights finished first in the PSAC West with an 11-1-4 record and Advanced to the PSAC Tournament championship game last year. Returning the PSAC West freshman of the year in Ella Fadale, it'll be a huge weekend matchup for both squads.

The Lakers field some stellar players themselves. Maddie Elbro, Taryn Baxter, and Maycen Anthony lead the charge defensively and have shown that they are a tough bunch to score on. Mercyhurst has also attacked in a variety of ways through four games, with five different players scoring in just the last game alone. Camille Bultel, Emily Mijares, and Corrine Morgan each have 2 goals on the season.
