Box Score Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst Women's Soccer welcomed Clarion to Saxon Stadium for a match. The Lakers led from start to finish in a 5-0 win.
How it Happened
The Lakers came out firing on all cylinders, scoring just one minute into the game. Karah Van Horn found Corrine Morgan who fired a shot into the back of the net, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead. A little later a shot by Teagan Mehalko deflected off the goaltender and bounced right to Camille Bultel who cleaned up the loose ball for the goal. The Lakers took a 2-0 lead. Right before halftime the Lakers added another goal. This time it was Emily Mijares who put home her first goal of the season. The Lakers extended their lead to 3-0. The Lakers went to the locker room with a 3-0 lead.
Midway through the second half the Lakers were granted a corner kick. Madison Hoover took the corner kick and placed it beautifully in front of the net for Taryn Baxter to bang it home off a header. The Lakers extended the lead even further to 4-0. The Lakers continued to keep Clarion off the scoreboard with great defense and great goaltending by Maddie Elbro. The Lakers were able to put the game out of reach late in the second half with a goal by Vanessa Evans. Evans was in the right place at the right time and slipped one past the goaltender for her first goal of the year.
Head Coach Rich Wall commented on his team's performance, "we've done well to bounce back from some adversity during the first week of the season. The last three matches have been solid team performances. Today it was great to create a lot of chances and get goal contributions from five different players."
Highlights
Karah Van Horn assisted on Corinne Morgan's second goal of the season. Camille Bultel netted her second goal of the season. Emily Mijares, Taryn Baxter, and Vanessa Evans all scored their first goals of the season. Maddie Elbro only faced three shots the whole game but saved all three. Elbro and the defense pitched their third straight shutout.
