Field Hockey Clips Roberts Wesleyan in Season Opener

Rochester, N.Y. - Mercyhurst Field Hockey grabs win number one of the season in their opener as they take down the Redhawks. The Lakers wasted no time jumping out to a big advantage, leading 7-0 at the half, before taking home the 12-0 victory.

How it Happened

Mercyhurst grabbed the early lead with a goal from Jen Kemp off of a corner with Delfina Magro coming up with the assist just under six minutes into the game. Two minutes later, Ellie Shau added on with a goal of her own to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead going into the first quarter.

The second stanza was one where Mercyuhrst began to take control with five goals. Freshman Amy Van Rooyen scored her first collegiate goal to open the period, putting one in the back of the cage with just under four minutes expired from the clock.

Lexi Odrobina added on 30 seconds later with the assists from Maddie Huffer and Samantha Myers to make it 4-0. Schau continued her strong day with her second goal midway through the period before finishing the half with her third goal of the game, making it 8-0.

The Laker's strong performance continued in the second half with one goal in the third before netting four in the fourth, helping them score double-digits for the first time ever in the 12-0 win.

Highlights

Ellie Schau led the way with four goals on the day while Jenna Cavalieri added three to her line with three assists as well. Lexi Odrobina joined the duo as the third Laker to have multiple goals. A total of four players recoded multiple assists with Cavalieri's three while Samantha Myers, Delfina Magro, and Maddie Huffer had two apiece.

Next Game

Mercyhurst and the Redhawks see each other again on Sunday, September 3rd, when Roberts Wesleyan comes to Saxon Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
