Box Score

North Canton, Oh. - Mercyhurst Women's Soccer team opened up their 2023 season Thursday afternoon, falling in a tight contest to Walsh by a final of 2-1.

The Lakers fell behind early as the Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half. Katie Corrigan was able to sneak a shot past Maddie Elbro to give Walsh the go-ahead goal. Ashley Story was credited with the assist.

The Lakers quickly responded with a goal of their own 10 minutes later. Teagan Mehalko notted the game at 1-1 off a penalty kick and sparked the squad going into halftime.

The game remained tied until Kailey Hobart was able to find the back of the net off an assist from Taylor Tomlinson to help the Cavaliers regain the lead. The 2-1 Walsh advantage remained until the sound of the final horn as the Lakers were unable to get it done on the road in their first game of the new season.

Coach Rich Wall gave his thoughts on the contest and expressed that "we created enough dangerous chances to win the game, and it is evidenced by the quantity of saves we forced them to make to keep us out of goal." " Full credit to Walsh today, and congrats to Coach Brown on her first victory."

Highlights
Teagan Mehalko netted her first goal of the new season, helping set the tone for another impressive year. After scoring two goals a season ago for third-most on the team, the native of Bethel Park, Pa. looks to be a bigger threat inside the box this time around.

Next Game
With the loss, the Lakers fall to 0-1 on the season and look to bounce back on Saturday, September 2nd, as they play host to the visiting Bloomsburg Huskies. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM inside Saxon Stadium.
