Erie, Pa. – Mercyhurst Softball fell to Gannon in the first game of the day, 8-2, but bounced back in the second, dominating Lady Knights and eventually winning the game by a score of 12-2. After splitting with Gannon, the Lakers move on to 19-13 on the seaso and are 11-5 in conference play.
First Game
After securing two wins against Clarion yesterday, the squad returned to the Mercyhurst Softball Field for another busy day of action. Gannon was able to gain an early lead in the first inning, but the Lakers responded quickly with Allison Dejidas singling to right field and bringing in Madison Fry for a run, tying the game at 1-1.
The Lady Knights stepped on the gas after that, as they extended their lead to 4-1 in the third and continued their scoring run in the fifth inning, gaining an 8-1 advantage over the Lakers. Mercyhurst tried to answer back as Marisa Cartellone reached first on an error by the shortstop, allowing Dejidas to score to make it 8-2. The game ultimately ended with a final score of 8-2 in favor of Gannon, despite the Lakers' valiant effort in the later innings.
Second Game
The squad turned things around in the second game, as the Lakers started the game with a dominant first-inning performance. Cheyenne Hindman hit a double to left field, driving in Fry for the first run of the game. Eliza Reynolds then followed with a grand slam, driving in Brienne Egelston, Dejidas, and Hindman to make it a 5-0 game.
Fry then singled to the left field, bringing Cartellone home, 5-0. Anna O'Geen also singled, as Fry and Irwin advanced to the home plate, as the Lakers gained an impressive 9-0 lead over their cross-town rivals.
Hindman struck again in the third inning as she hit a home run, which extended the lead to 12-0. The Lady Knights worked hard to come back into the game, but the Lakers held their lead and eventually won the game by a score of 12-2.
Highlights
Madison Fry and Cheyenne Hindman both had four hits across the two games with Hindman adding both a double and a home run to her line to go along with four RBIs. She was joined by Eliza Reynolds in the homer category with her second of the season, going a combined 1-5 in the two games with four RBIs. Morgan Hilty proved solid in the circle in game two as she pitched a five-inning complete game with four hits and three Ks to her ledger.
What's Next
The Lakers travel to Buffalo, N.Y. on Wednesday, April 12th, to take on D'Youville in a doubleheader with the first game scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
