Clarion, Pa. – Mercyhurst Softball dominates Clarion in a doubleheader on the road as they defeat the Golden Eagles by scores of 6-3 and 17-5. The Lakers extend their winning streak to four games as they move up to 18-12 on the season and 10-4 in conference play.
First Game
Mercyhurst struck first in the first inning, with a double to left field by Allison Dejidas, driving in Anna O'Geen to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. Clarion answered in the second as Tori Matrano hit a double to the left field to even the score at 1-1.
In the top of the fourth inning, Mercyhurst took the lead again with an unearned run scored by Brienne Egelston on an error by the shortstop. Francesca Latino then hit a double to right center, bringing in Eliza Reynolds, to make the score 3-1 in favor of Mercyhurst.
In the sixth inning, Mercyhurst extended their lead with two unearned runs, as Karlie Kasten scored on an error by the second baseman and Kacie Irwin scored on a single by O'Geen, making the score 5-2 in favor of Mercyhurst.
In the seventh inning, Mercyhurst added another run with a single to right field by Reynolds, driving in Dejidas to make the score 6-2. Clarion managed to answer back, but it wasn't enough to change the game as Mercyhurst took the first win, 6-3.
Second Game
The Lakers also started the second game strong, as Cheyenne Hindman doubled to the left field line, driving in Madison Fry, who later scored on a sacrifice fly by Egelston. In the same inning, Alexandra Acosta-Reyes singled through the left side to bring in Reynolds and Dejidas to increase the lead to 3-0.
In the second inning, Dejidas doubled to left field, allowing O'Geen to score and extending the lead 4-0. Clarion answered back in the third inning, recording a couple of nice hits and making the score 4-3.
Mercyhurst extended their lead in the fourth when Egelston hit a fly ball to center field, allowing Fry to score, 5-3. Clarion tied the game in the fifth inning after Alyssa Stitt hit a home run, 5-5.
Mercyhurst took over in the in the sixth, as they couldn't be stopped and scored six runs to increase their lead to 11-5.
Mercyhurst continued to pile on the runs in the 7th inning, scoring six more runs to make the final score 17-5. Marissa Cartellone, Kacie Irwin, Mikaela Schramski, Alexandra Acosta-Reyes, Ashlyn Harvey and Kacie Irwin each drove in a run to complete the scoring onslaught.
Highlights
The Lakers haven't scored over 17 runs in a single game since February 12, 2012, when they defeated Shaw by a score of 22-5. Moreover, ten Lakers scored a run in the second game of the day, showing the overall effort of the Lakers in the big win.
What's Next
The Lakers return home tomorrow to take on Gannon in another doubleheader at Mercyhurst Softball Field. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. with the backend 30 minutes after game one's final out.
