Erie, Pa. – Mercyhurst Softball dominates Gannon in their last regular season doubleheader, as they win the first game by a score of 10-5 and follow that with another win at 11-3. The Lakers move up to a 31-19 overall record and a 21-11 conference mark, as they seal the second spot in PSAC West.
First Game
In the first inning, Mercyhurst took the lead as Anna O'Geen grounded out to second base, bringing in Madison Fry to register the first run of the game, 1-0. Gannon responded quickly in the bottom of the inning as Jules Ryan singled up the middle, bringing Andrea Watson home to tie the game at 1-1.
Mercyhurst gained momentum in the second inning as Fry reached on a fielder's choice while Marisa Cartellone scored to give Mercyhurst a 2-1 lead. Allison Dejidas flied out to the right field to score another before Eliza Reynolds followed with a single to center field to extend Mercyhurst's lead to 5-1.
Gannon fought back in the third inning as Ryan doubled down the left field line, once again scoring Watson to make it 5-2. In the fifth inning, O'Geen singled up the middle, allowing Kacie Irwin to score, increasing Mercyhurst's lead to 6-2. A couple of minutes after that Gannon's Josie Spano homered to left field, bringing the score to 6-3.
Mercyhurst sealed their victory in the seventh inning as Brianne Egelston doubled to left field, scoring Reynolds and Fry to make it 8-3. Cheyenne Hindman flied out to the right field, scoring Reynolds, and Cartellone doubled to right field, and bringing in Egelston to give Mercyhurst a 10-3 lead. Gannon scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough to win, as the Lakers took the first game by a score of 10-5.
Second Game
The Lakers once again started well, as Egelston hit a single to left field, bringing in Reynolds and Dejidas, 2-0. Later in the inning, Alexandra Acosta-Reyes reached second on a fielding error while Hindman and Egelston scored, adding two more runs to the board to make it 4-0.
Mercyhurst recorded a productive fourth inning, with Fry hitting a double down the left field line, allowing Kacie to score, and Dejidas hitting a ground ball to the pitcher, allowing Clark to bring in Fry, 6-3. Reynolds then hit a single to left field, bringing in Clark before Egelston hit a double to right center, allowing Reynolds to score. Finally, Cartellone walked, allowing Hindman to score on a wild pitch, bringing the score to 10-3 for the Lakers.
Dejidas finished another game this season as she hit a single to left field, bringing in Fry, and winning it for the Lakers, 11-3.
Playoff Picture
With 21-11 conference mark the Lakers finish the regular season in second place, behind only Seton Hill (22-8). Mercyhurst already clinched a PSAC Tournament berth and are looking ahead to the postseason play.
