Indiana, Pa. – Mercyhurst Softball continues their winning streak as they take down IUP on the road, winning the first game by a score of 10-1 and the second 6-1. The Lakers move up to 27-17 on the year and now boast a 17-9 conference mark.
First Game
The squad started the first game of the day well as Allison Dejidas hit a homer to right field, scoring the first run of the game to make it 1-0. IUP retaliated with a run of their own in the bottom of the first with Delaney Patella singling through the left side to score Paige Truax.
Mercyhurst continued their strong performance in the second inning, with Kacie Irwin singling to second base, scoring Cheyenne Hindman while Madison Fry reached on a fielder's choice to score Francesca Latino, 3-1.
In the third inning, Mercyhurst extended their lead even further with Brianne Egelston doubling down the left field, scoring Dejidas, 4-1. Latino singled to right field to bring in Hindman and Egelston, and Marisa Cartellone grounded into a double play, extending the lead to 7-1 in favor of Mercyhurst.
The game remained relatively quiet until the sixth inning, when Egelston hit another double, scoring Dejidas and Anna O'Geen. Hindman then singled down the left field line, as Egelston touched the home plate, bringing the final score to 10-1 for the Lakers.
Second Game
The Lakers once again scored first as Cartellone hit a homer to right center, also scoring Latino and putting Mercyhurst in the lead at 2-0. IUP responded in the fourth inning with Madison Pikula scoring a run, and bringing the score to 2-1.
The game remained quiet until the sixth inning when Dejidas hit another home run on the day, extending Mercyhurst's lead to 3-1. The Lakers didn't stop there as they extended the lead in the seventh inning, eventually winning the second game by a score of 6-1.
Playoff Picture
With today's victories against IUP, the Lakers strengthen their position at the second spot in the PSAC West standings. They currently have a 17-9 conference record and sit right behind Seton Hill (18-6). The Lakers are followed by Slippery Rock (15-9) and Cal (Pa.) (14-10).
What's Next
Mercyhurst hits the road again on Tuesday, April 25th, to take on Edinboro, with the first game scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
