California, Pa. - Mercyhurst Baseball was able to win a pair of games against the Vulcans in three tries on Sunday afternoon. They finished out their previously suspended 12-inning game with a walk-off win, 3-2, before defeating Cal 9-2 in game three and falling 7-4 in the finale.
How It Happened
Game One
The Lakers finished out their second game of the series after it was suspended due to weather this past Friday. The game picked up in the bottom of the 12th with the score tied at 2-2, staying right there until the 13th. A double off the bat of Casey Smith helped get things started for the Lakers while a pinch-hit single down the right field line off the bat of Eric Chorba brought in Smith for the second Laker walk-off in as many games to finish things out 3-2.
Game Two
The first regularly scheduled game of the day started off with little offense as both teams went down in order in the opening inning. Cal managed to make some noise in the second as they left three on base, but Laker hurler, Aiden Kelly, was able to keep them off the board with a swinging strikeout to get out of the jam.
The Lakers were the first to strike with a pair of runs coming in the top of the third. Both came via a home run off the bat of Luke Jackson who sent his seventh long ball over the left field wall, scoring Eric Chorba after he doubled to deep right. Mercyhurst then hit their second homer of the game with John Susnik hitting one of his own for his second in the series, making it 4-0.
Mercyhurst tacked on two more in the top of the fifth thanks to a two-RBI single from Lucas Folmar to make it a 6-0 game. After the first two outs of the inning were made, a single to right off the bat and a subsequent steal by Zachary Kourous, Folmar laced one to right to score Kourous and Jackson who reached via an error.
The Lakers added on with three more runs in the sixth after Cal finally put a dent in the scoreboard to make it a 9-1 game before scoring again in the seventh, but it was not enough as the score stood at 9-2 in the end.
Game Three
Coach Spano's crew wasted no time jumping out in front in the series finale with a trio of runs in the first inning. Chorba got the ball rolling with a ground ball RBI to make it 1-0 while Chris Juchno followed with a two-run home run. After a single from Jackson, Juchno went to the opposite field for his fifth homer of the year, making it 3-0. John Susnik continued his strong performance against Cal with a single past the shortstop in the top of the second, making it 4-1 with the Vulcans scoring in the bottom of the first.
Cal ended up adding on and taking the lead in the middle innings. After scoring one run each of the first three frames, the Vulcans put a three-spot on the board in the bottom of the fourth to take a lead at 6-4 thanks to a two-run, one-out single. They then added on with an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth before finishing things out in the seventh to avoid the sweep in the 7-4 win.
Highlights
Aiden Kelly picked up win number three of the season in game one, going five innings while giving up one run with six strikeouts to his line.
