Mount Olive, NC – Mercyhurst Softball splits on the first day of competition in North Carolina. They defeated West Liberty by a score of 8-0, but followed that with a loss against Mount Olive, 6-5 as they now stand at .500 on the year, taking a 4-4 record into day two of their weekend slate.
How it Happened
First Game
The Lakers started the day well, as they jumped out to an early lead in the beautiful Carolina weather. Brianne Egelston doubled to left field with Madison Fry scoring the first run for the squad, making it 1-0. A couple of minutes later, Kaci Alderson homered over the fence in left-center field, allowing Cheyenne Hindman to score a run, 3-0.
Mercyhurst continued their scoring run in the second inning, as Egelston once again doubled to drive in Anna O'Geen and Eliza Reynold to make it 5-0. The Lakers didn't slow down as Allison Dejidas hit an impressive home run and extended the lead to eight runs. Mercyhurst held that lead and eventually won the game by a score of 8-0.
Second Game
Fry started the second game in a similar way, as she hit the ball and got on the base. A little later, Egelston got a base knock as well which allowed Fry to score a run and put the Lakers on the scoreboard, 1-0.
The Trojans answered right back as they scored three points in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1. The Lakers then tied the game in the sixth, as Dejidas showcased her power at the plate with another dinger on the day to tie things up at 4-4.
Mercyhurst got the lead in the eighth inning, as Brianne Egelston got to second base after a nice double and eventually touched home plate after another hit by Dejidas as the Lakers took the lead at 5-4.
Despite great efforts, the Trojans managed to score two more times and eventually won the game by a score of 6-5.
Highlights
After winning the PSAC Athlete of the Week, Allison Dejidas did not slow down as she hit two homers on day one of the weekend slate. She finished 3-5 on the day overall, adding to her team-high RBI total with now seven on the season. Brianne Elgeston proved to be a big bat as well, going 3-6 with a pair of doubles in the team's win while scoring a pair of runs and knocking in four. Mikaela Schramski makes a bid for back-to-back PSAC Pitcher of the Week honors as she went five scoreless innings with three hits allowed and six strikeouts in the 8-0 win over West Liberty.
What's Next
The Lakers return to the diamond tomorrow to play the same opponents one more time. They are scheduled to take on Mount Olive at 1:00 p.m. and follow that with a matchup against West Liberty at 3:00 p.m.
