Erie, Pa. - Just two days after playing a 20 inning game, Mercyhurst Baseball goes into extra innings once again in their series finale with Slippery Rock. This one didn't go nearly as long with The Rock able to plate one in the top of the 8th to help them seize an 8-7 win.
How it Happened
The Rock managed to score four times in the first inning, claiming the early lead. Slippery Rock capitalized on two hit by pitches in the opening frame with a two-run double being their biggest base knock. Mercyhurst managed to respond in the bottom of the frame with Luke Jackson driving in Matt Christopher on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.
The Lakers inched a little closer in the second as they scored two. Mitchell Grosch played a big part in getting the two Mercyhurst runs as he hit a double to plate John Susnik from second, making it 5-2. He then came around to score off of a wild pitch.
The Lakers found their groove again in the fifth with two runs in the frame. A triple off the bat of Zachary Kourous got the scoring started as he knocked one off the right field wall. Lucas Folmar ended up bringing the freshman next as he doubled down the right field line with Mercyhurst tying up the score at 5-5 going into the sixth.
Slippery Rock responded with a pair of runs to reclaim the lead, but the Lakers did not stay behind all too long. They scored two runs in an inning for the third time in the game in the sixth to help them tie the score up once again as a single up the middle from Luke Jackson made the score 7-7. Mercyhurst couldn't get over the hump and take the lead, though, with a homer in the top of the eighth for The Rock sealing the one-run loss.
Highlights
Mercyhurst finished the game with five hits with three of them going for extra bases. Both Lucas Folmar and Mitchell Grosch finished with a double to their line while Zachary Kourous got the first triple of his collegiate career.
