Softball Grabs Two Wins Against Cal (Pa.)

California, Pa. – Mercyhurst Softball continues their winning streak as they take down Cal (Pa.), winning two games on the road to open PSAC play. The Lakers defeated the Vulcans by a score of 10-8 in the first game and followed that with an exciting, extra-innings 6-5 victory in game two to move to 10-8 on the year.

How It Happened

First Game

Cal (Pa.) got off to a great start in the first inning when Achtermeier hit a three-run homer, with Fiorilli and Henderson on base. In the second inning, Achtermeier continued her strong performance, hitting an RBI single that allowed Fiorilli to score again, making the score 4-0 in favor of the Vulcans.

Mercyhurst fought back in the fourth inning when Cheyenne Hindman hit a two-run homer and Allison Dejidas followed with a solo homer, bringing the score to 4-3. Marissa Cartellone then hit an RBI single, allowing Neena Pietripaolo to reach third base and Kaci Alderson to score to tie the game at 4-4. Mercyhurst took the lead in the same inning when Alexandra Acosta-Reyes sacrificed herself on the bases in a rundown to let Pietripaolo tough home, making it 5-4.

In the fifth inning, Mercyhurst continued to dominate at the plate with Hindman hitting an RBI double and Dejidas following with an RBI single, making it 7-4. Alderson then hit an RBI double which allowed Dejidas to score and extend the lead to 8-4. Reynolds then hit an impressive two-run homer, with Alderson on base, making the score 10-4 to round out the scoring for the Lakers.

Cal (Pa.) worked hard to come back, but the Lakers held on to the lead, eventually winning the first game by a score of 10-8.

Second Game

Cal (Pa.) started the second game well the second time around as they took lead in the first inning. Mercyhurst answered in the third as they tied the game when Anna O'Geen advanced to second on a throwing error by the opponents, allowing Fry to score. Hindman then singled to center field, bringing O'Geen home and putting Mercyhurst ahead 2-1.

Mercyhurst tied the game again in the 4th inning when Acosta-Reyes singled to center field to bring Kaci Irwin home. However, the Vulcans regained the lead in the same inning when Henderson doubled down the left line, taking the lead and extending it to 5-3.

In the 7th inning, Mercyhurst made a comeback when Fry tripled to left center, bringing Jessica Clark home. Hindman then singled to left center to tie the game at 5-5.

In the 8th inning, Mercyhurst took the lead when Cartellone flied out to the right field, bringing Alderson home and making the final score 6-5 in favor of Mercyhurst with Morgan Hilty shutting the door in the bottom half of the frame.
