Seton Hill, Pa. – Mercyhurst Softball falls to Seton Hill twice in their matchup on the road. The Lakers were able to keep things close in both contests, but despite their best effort, they move to 10-10 in the 2-1 and 6-5 losses.
How it Happened
Game One
Mercyhurst took an early lead in the second inning when Marissa Cartellone hit a double to right field, bringing in Allison Dejidas to score and giving Mercyhurst a 1-0 lead. However, Seton Hill managed to tie the game in the fifth inning when they scored on an error by the third baseman, making it 1-1.
Neither team was able to put a run on the board through the next six innings as the game into extra tied at one apiece. Seton Hill managed to get the leadoff batter on with a single before she moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt, From there, a single off the left field wall sealed the victory for the Griffins in walk-off fashion.
Game Two
In the second game of the day, the Lakers took an early lead in the first inning when Dejidas hitting a single to bring in Madison Fry, 1-0. The game remained 1-0 until the fifth inning when Mercyhurst scored two more runs. Fry was the driving force this time around as she hit a single to second base, bringing Alexandra Acosta-Reyes before a Cheyenne Hindman sacrifice fly made it 3-0.
Mercyhurst added two more runs in the sixth inning when Acosta-Reyes hit a single to center field, bringing in Neena Pietripaolo, followed by Kaci Irwin's single to plate Cartellone as the Lakers were now ahead 5-0
The Griffins didn't give up as they scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to get on the board and continued their scoring run in the next inning. The biggest hit of the frame for Seton Hill was a three-run walk-off home run over the left field wall off the bat of Brooke Cleland to give SHU the two-game sweep.
Highlights
Madison Fry, Neena Pietripaolo, and Marissa Cartellone tied for the team lead in hits with three apiece with Cartellone hitting a pair of doubles on the day for two of the team's three extra base hits. Jessica Clark had the other as she doubles in game two after taking over for Irwin in left field late. Mikaela Schramski proved big in the circle in game one, going 7.1 innings while allowing just two runs and striking out four.
What's Next
Mercyhurst gets back on the road on Tuesday, March 28th, as they take on Slippery Rock in another PSAC doubleheader. They then stay on the road to fave D'Youville on Wednesday before coming home for UPJ on Saturday to round out the month of March.
