Erie, Pa. – Mercyhurst Softball dominates Lake Erie in a double-header on the Mercyhurst Softball Field Tuesday afternoon. The Lakers stepped on the gas in the first game as they defeated the Storm by a score of 8-1 and follow that with another impressive victory, 3-2.
How it Happened
First Game
The Lakers started off strong in the first inning with
Madison Fry scoring on an error by the Storm's shortstop, allowing
Allison Dejidas to reach first base.
Neena Pietripaolo hit a fielder's choice, allowing
Anna O'Geen to score and putting the Lakers up 2-0. The Lakers continued to dominate in the third inning with Pietripaolo hitting a single to center field, allowing
Eliza Reynolds to advance to third and
Cheyenne Hindman to score to make it 3-0.
The Lakers continued to dominate in the fifth inning with Marissa Cartellone hitting her second double, this time to right center field, which allowed Reynolds to score as the Lakers took a 6-0 lead. However, the Storm didn't give up and fought back in the 6th inning, making it 6-1.
But the Lakers quickly responded in the bottom of the 6th inning, with Dejidas hitting a single to right center field, allowing Fry to score and increasing the Lakers' lead to 8-1. Despite the Storm's efforts, the Lakers held onto their lead and won the game with a final score of 8-1.
Second Game
The Lakers started off strong in the first inning, with Dejidas hitting a double to right center, allowing Hindman to score and putting the Lakers up 1-0.
The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when the Storm finally broke through with a big play, as Lake Erie's Mullholand hit a double to left center, bringing two players home and giving the Storm a 2-1 lead.
The Lakers quickly responded in the bottom of the sixth inning, with
Brianne Egelston hitting a double to right center, allowing
Karlie Kasten to score and tying the game at 2-2. Moments later, Kaci Irwin hit a single and advanced to second base on the throw, which brought in Egelston, giving the Lakers a 3-2 lead.
The Storm attempted a comeback in the top of the 7th inning, but the Laker's defense held strong, securing the 3-2 victory for Mercyhurst as Irwin made a diving catch to end the inning.
Highlights
The Lakers showcased great defense in the first game, holding the Lake Erie Storm to just one run in the 6th inning. Egelston was the standout player in the second game for the Lakers, hitting two doubles and bringing in a run in the 6th inning to help tie the game. Irwin also had a key hit, bringing in a run and securing the Laker's victory with a diving catch.
What's Next
The Lakers are scheduled to get back on the road tomorrow as they dive into conference play against Cal (Pa.) as first pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
