Lakers Split with Falcons

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst Softball finally got to play on their own field for the first time in 2023, going 1-1 with them dropping the first game 8-7 while grabbing the 10-2 win over Notre Dame (Oh.) to move to 6-8 on the year.

How it Happened

First Game

The Lakers fired the opening salvo with a double from Cheyenne Hindman in the first inning to give Mercyhurst a 2-0 lead. After Notre Dame scored one in the second, Allison Dejidas helped give the Lakers a two-run lead once again with a home run, her third of the season.

She got her second of the game in the fourth inning with a three-run shot to give Mercyhurst a 6-2 advantage.

The Falcons did not lay down as they were able to score six unanswered runs over the next two innings. The sixth frame was their best of the game as they scored four runs with a two-out, two-run single to give Notre Dame an 8-6 advantage.

The Lakers did manage to score one in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Marisa Cartellone, but that was all they could muster as they fell 8-7.

Game Two

Once again, Mercyhurst was able to get on the board first with Hindman coming up clutch with a double to make it a 1-0 game in the first.

A single off the bat of Hindman in the third helped make it 2-0 while Dejidas followed with a single of her own, making it 4-0 going into the fourth. Eliza Reynolds helped add on with another two-RBI single in the fourth inning as the Lakers began to run away from their counterpart.

After Notre Dame managed to score twice in the top half of the fifth, but that was all for naught as Hindman hit a walk-off home run in the bottom the canto to help make it an eight-run game to claim their first win on their own turf of the new season.

Highlights

Allison Dejidas shone with a pair of home runs in her two games, going 3-5 with six RBIs to lead the team. Anna O'Geen and Cheyenne Hindman tied for the team lead in hits with five apiece while Hindman added a pair of doubles and a homer to her line. Morgan Hilty pitched well for the Lakers in game two with a complete game. She allowed just two runs while giving up four runs and four strikeouts.
