Box Score 2 Glenville, WV - Mercyhurst Softball dropped a pair of games on Saturday with an 8-0 loss to Glenville before falling to Frostburg State 5-4 to round out their weekend.
How it Happened
Game One
Mercyhurst opened up their two-game set on the road with a loss as they fell to host Glenville State by a final of 8-0. The Lakers found it tough sledding against the Pioneers as their offense could produce only one hit and one walk with the base knock coming courtesy of the Laker backstop Madison Fry.
Glenville got the scoring started in the second with three runs while adding on in both the third and sixth innings. At the end of the third frame, Mercyhurst was down 5-0 while the Pioneers added three to the scoreboard in their half of the sixth to take an 8-0 lead they'd never relinquish. The Laker's opposition used some solid power prowess to help them plate their runs as three of their scoring plays came courtesy of doubles.
Game Two
The second contest proved to be a bit closer with the Lakers falling by just one. Mercyhurst tried to rally late and grab the win over Frostburg State, but their efforts were not enough in the one-run loss.
The Bobcats fired the opening salvo with one run in the second inning. They got a double to lead off the inning, spelling trouble for Mercyhurst as that runner came around to score, making it 1-0. Frostburg then threatened to put a crooked number on the board, but was turned away as a pair of grounders ended the frame. Frostburg did, however, add two in the bottom of the third as they found themselves ahead 3-0 going into the middle innings.
After missing out on a good run-scoring opportunity in the second, Mercyhurst broke through in the fifth frame to inch closer. Allison Dejidas walked while going on to third off of an Eliza Reynold double before coming home for the first Laker run of the game on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Cheyenne Hindman. They struck again in the sixth for one to make it a 4-2 game as things had become interesting.
Mercyhurst's offense started slow in their final time at the plate as they made back-to-back outs. They did not give in, though, as three straight hits plated a pair of runs to knot things up at four apiece. Freshman Francesca Latino started things off with a double while Kacie Irwin and Anna O'Green both singled with Latino and Irwin touching home plate.
The Bobcats were able to stop the bleeding and keep things tied before taking the game in the bottom of the seventh. After making two outs to begin the frame, a double and a single ended the contest as Frostburg's two-hole hitter came around to score after her double that started the late rally.
Highlights
Both Brianne Egelston and Anna O'Green finished the Frostburg game with three hits to lead the team on the weekend while all six of their hits combined were singles. Madison Fry had two hits in her two games, one in each, to be tied with Latino for second-most on the weekend with the freshman having both a single and a double in the game against the Bobcats.
