Erie, Pa – Mercyhurst Women's Basketball falls to Gannon by a score of 82-68. Despite great efforts, the Lakers are unable to claim the win and keep their season alive in the PSAC Tournament, finishing their season 14-14 overall and 10-12 in the conference.
First Half
The Lakers started the game slowly as the Lady Knights went inside and capitalized on their size difference to get an early lead, 8-2. The Lakers answered right away as Julia Buchman caught fire and knocked down two three-pointers, trying the game 10-10.
Gannon went on a run after the media timeout as they jumped out to a nine-point lead with two minutes left in the quarter, 19-10. Jayde Boyd went inside and scored a layup in transition, and Buchman netted another deep three to bring her squad within six points, 22-16. Paige Woodford had one more chance to score as she beat the buzzer with a turnaround floater to finish the quarter to make it 25-18.
The second quarter was also extremely competitive and physical, as both teams worked hard for every possession. A couple of minutes in, Jayde Boyd danced in front of her defender, went inside, and finished the and-one play with an acrobatic layup, 30-23.
Bailey Kuhns received the ball inside and scored a nice hook shot to finish the half, 39-28.
Second Half
Woodford started the second half with a punch as she went inside and finished with a nice layup as the score held at 41-30. She struck again two minutes later as she knocked down a corner three to bring her team within 13 points, 46-33.
Buchman received the pass from Kuhns, went inside and finished a floater with a foul, 48-35.
The Lady Knights kept applying pressure, as they would often throw the ball inside and use their size to score down low. They eventually won the third quarter by a score of 62-44.
The Lakers kept fighting in the fourth, as Kuhns went inside and finished with a foul, 64-51.
Lexi Wagner got active with three minutes to go, as she knocked down two three-point shots in a row, 76-64. Despite great efforts, Mercyhurst couldn't get back into the game, though, as the Lady Knights eventually won by a score of 82-68.
Highlights
Paige Woodford led the charge with 18 points on 6-7 shooting from the field. She was helped by a freshman, Bailey Kuhns as she recorded 15 points, and added four rebounds.
