Box Score 2 Tucson, AZ – Mercyhurst Softball finishes the second day of the DII Cactus Classic with two wins. The Lakers defeats Simon Fraser University by a score of 4-3, and follow that with another victory against Georgian Court, 8-6 to move to 2-2 on the young year.
First Game
The Lakers returned to the diamond for another busy day in the Arizona sun. Simon Frasier started the first game well as they took an early lead, scoring in the first inning to make it 1-0. Mercyhurst answered in the second as Brianne Egelston and Cheyenne Hindman showcased their hitting skills and touched home plate to put the Lakers in the lead, 2-1.
Simon Fraser scored in the third and eighth, but Mercyhurst didn't give up. The Lakers were able to come away with the walk-off win, 4-3, to get win number one of the season.
Second Game
The squad was not finished though, as the Lakers took on Georgian Court in another intense game in the DII Cactus Classic. This time Mercyhurst started with a punch, as Egelston scored early with Kacie Irwin and Anna O'Geen following. Irwin led off the inning with a walk and came home on a double by O'Green before the Laker second basemen followed off an error, making it 3-0.
Despite early heroics, Georgian Court didn't give up and tied the game in the sixth inning, 6-6. The Lakers stepped on the gas once again as O'Geen and Neena Pietripaolo scored for their squad, eventually giving the Lakers an 8-6 victory.
What's Next
The Lakers return to action tomorrow for the final day of the DII Cactus Classic. Mercyhurst is scheduled to play Western Oregon at 10:00 a.m. and Minnesota-Crookston at 2:00 p.m.
